# Unlocking Maritime Careers: The Ministry's Bold Modernization Plan for Indonesian Fisheries

Stepping onto the deck of a modernized fishing vessel is about to become a reality for thousands of skilled mariners across the archipelago. The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries has officially unveiled a visionary roadmap designed to revitalize the nation's capture fisheries while substantially elevating the livelihoods of coastal communities. At the core of this monumental initiative lies the construction of a cutting-edge fleet, signaling an unprecedented era of economic growth and professional opportunities within the maritime sector.

## The Vision Behind the National Fishing Vessel Modernization Program

Scheduled for rollout in phases between 2026 and 2028, this ambitious undertaking features the development of 1,582 modern fishing vessels tailored to the diverse geographical landscapes of Indonesian waters. These advanced watercraft will incorporate specialized gear—such as Pelagic Purse Seines, Gill Nets, Handlines, Bottom Longlines, Tuna Pole Lines, and dedicated carrier ships—to optimize harvesting efficiency and resource management.

Beyond bolstering national fleets and upgrading industry infrastructure, the program serves as a powerful catalyst for job creation. Operating this extensive fleet requires a massive workforce of 20,000-plus highly trained professionals, opening doors for aspiring mariners ready to embark on rewarding ocean-going careers.

## Workforce Requirements: Crewing the Future Fleet

To successfully manage the 1,582 newly commissioned vessels, the ministry requires a total of 20,094 Fishing Vessel Crew members. This specialized workforce is divided into two primary categories:
